Understanding your AMH test
If you've recently received an AMH result, you may be wondering what it really means—and whether you should be worried.
The good news is that AMH is only one piece of your fertility picture. While it provides valuable information about your ovarian reserve, it does not tell you whether you can become pregnant.
What is AMH?
AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone) is a hormone produced by the small follicles in your ovaries that contain immature eggs.
The amount of AMH in your blood provides an estimate of your ovarian reserve—the number of eggs remaining in your ovaries. Think of AMH as a measure of egg quantity, not egg quality.
What can AMH tell you?
AMH helps fertility specialists:
• Estimate your ovarian reserve.
• Predict how your ovaries may respond to IVF stimulation.
• Guide decisions about egg freezing or fertility treatment.
• Determine whether further fertility investigations may be useful.
AMH is most informative when interpreted alongside your age and an antral follicle count (AFC) ultrasound.
What can't AMH tell you?
AMH cannot:
• Predict your chances of natural pregnancy.
• Measure the quality of your eggs.
• Diagnose infertility on its own.
• Tell you exactly when menopause will occur.
This is why AMH should never be interpreted in isolation.
AMH and age
AMH naturally declines with age, but there is considerable variation between women of the same age. The values below are approximate population ranges and should not be interpreted as fertility cut-offs.

Common misconceptions
Does a low AMH mean I can't get pregnant?
No. Many women with a low AMH conceive naturally. A lower AMH generally means fewer eggs remain in the ovaries, but it does not tell us whether those eggs are capable of leading to a healthy pregnancy.
Does a high AMH mean I'm very fertile?
Not necessarily. A higher AMH usually reflects a larger ovarian reserve, but fertility also depends on egg quality, ovulation, sperm quality, uterine health, and other factors. Some women with very high AMH have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which can make conception more difficult despite having many follicles.
When should you speak with a fertility specialist?
Consider seeking specialist advice if:
• Your AMH is lower than expected for your age.
• You've been trying to conceive without success.
• You're considering egg freezing or IVF.
• You have endometriosis, previous ovarian surgery, or a family history of early menopause.
